Shifting Lives Through Earthing – A Psychiatrist’s Perspective

By Shift Doctors · Comments (1)
Monday, August 20th, 2012

I love digging in the dirt and feeling my connection to the Earth.  I find walking barefoot in the grass to be a great stress reducer. As a young girl, I used to run around barefoot with my siblings during the warm summer days, and recall how free and wonderful it felt. My father, a rural doctor, would always yell at us about the danger of cutting our feet or stepping on a nail. We would just laugh it off and continue romping barefoot.

In my integrative psychiatric practice, I often recommend ‘Earthing’ to patients as part of an integrative approach to healing.  In my mind, it is in alignment with the ancient medical doctrine of “Primum non nocere” – which means “First, do no harm”.

Earthing refers to the practice of making contact with the surface of the Earth either directly, with the skin contacting the surface of the Earth- or by having the skin make indirect contact with the Earth through the use of conductive materials. The Earth constantly sheds an endless supply of electrons (negatively charged particles) from its surface. You can’t see the Earth’s energy but some people can feel it as a warm, tingling, and pleasant sensation when they out walking barefoot along the water’s edge at the beach or on a stretch of dew-moistened grass.

Throughout history humans walked barefoot and slept directly on the ground or separated from the ground by only a mat. But modern lifestyle, including the widespread use of insulative rubber- or Read More→

PTSD, Trauma & Depression

PTSD, Trauma & Depression by Tracy Latz, M.D.

Depression is a common problem that can occur following trauma. It involves feelings of sadness or low mood that last more than just a few days. Unlike a blue mood that comes and goes, depression lasts 2 or more weeks. Depression can get in the way of performing activities of daily life, make it hard to function and can cause you to lose your passion for living. It can affect eating and sleeping habits, ability to concentrate, and your confidence or self-esteem.

How commonly does depression follow trauma?

Depression affects almost 1 in 10 adult Americans yearly. Depression is a frequent symptom that occurs following trauma. For instance, a survey of survivors from the Oklahoma City bombing revealed that 23% reported depression after the bombing as compared to 13% of survivors who reported having depression before the bombing. Depression is frequently experienced in people diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

What are the symptoms of depression?

Real depression differs from feeling sad in that with a clinical depression the sad, blue, depressed mood or lack of interest in usual hobbies or interests must last for at least 2 weeks and must be accompanied by at least 3 to 4 of the following: significant weight loss or gain, sleep disturbance (increased or decreased), agitation or decreased motor activity, fatigue or loss of energy, excessive feelings of worthlessness or inappropriate guilt, concentration difficulty, and recurrent thoughts of death or suicide.

How are depression and trauma related?

Depression can either “come from out of the blue” or it can be triggered by stressful events such as divorce, loss, or a trauma. Difficulty coping with painful experiences can often lead to intense sadness or depression. Veterans returning from military conflict or a war zone, for instance, may have painful Read More→

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety disorder that can affect anyone who has experienced a trauma that is outside of a person’s usual life experience. In order to develop PTSD, a traumatic event must be experienced by you first-hand or the traumatic event may have involved another person that is witnessed by you. During this type of traumatic event, you think that your life or others’ lives are in danger. You may feel intensely afraid or feel that you have no control over what is happening around you or to you.

Events that may induce PTSD in some people include: combat or military exposure, child sexual or physical abuse, terrorist attacks, physical or sexual assault, serious industrial or motor vehicle accidents, or natural disasters, such as a fire, tornado, tsunami, volcanic eruption, hurricane, flood, mudslide or earthquake. After the event, you may feel frightened, confused, or angry. If these feelings don’t go away or worsen over time, you may have PTSD. These symptoms may begin to disrupt your Read More→

Depression, Anxiety and Suicidal Thoughts Due to Acute or Chronic Stress- What to Do

By Tracy Latz · Comments (7)
Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

We do tend to see an increase in depression with financial strain, acute or chronic stress reactions (exposure to trauma or overwhelming stress), marital strain, loss (job, loved ones through death/moving/separation/ divorce), debilitating physical illness, hormonal imbalances (sexual hormones or thyroid hormones), time of year (seasonal depression – which we are now in the time of year where we see an increase in that as the length of daylight hours get shorter; anniversaries of traumatic dates), overuse of alcohol/ opiates/other illicit substances, or certain medications. Over the past year I have been asked the following questions by patients, colleagues, journalists and friends. I thought I would share them with you all in the hopes that it might be helpful to someone you know. Most of the questions have to do with stress due to economy and financial issues; however, the answers are applicable to many other acute stress reactions and chronic stressors as well. This is a hard topic for many to discuss due to feeling so alone. You are not alone. Read More→

Women and Depression

By Tracy Latz · Comments (3)
Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

Depression occurs twice as often in women as men. Reasons for this may include hormonal fluctuations (normal cyclical hormonal issues during childbearing years, pregnancy, or hormonal treatments such oral contraceptives), sleep deprivation from childcare duties with infants/toddlers, and stress from attempting to balance household/childcare/workplace duties. Women who are depressed tend to experience more feelings of guilt than depressed men.
