PTSD, Trauma & Depression by Tracy Latz, M.D.

Depression is a common problem that can occur following trauma. It involves feelings of sadness or low mood that last more than just a few days. Unlike a blue mood that comes and goes, depression lasts 2 or more weeks. Depression can get in the way of performing activities of daily life, make it hard to function and can cause you to lose your passion for living. It can affect eating and sleeping habits, ability to concentrate, and your confidence or self-esteem.

How commonly does depression follow trauma?

Depression affects almost 1 in 10 adult Americans yearly. Depression is a frequent symptom that occurs following trauma. For instance, a survey of survivors from the Oklahoma City bombing revealed that 23% reported depression after the bombing as compared to 13% of survivors who reported having depression before the bombing. Depression is frequently experienced in people diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

What are the symptoms of depression?

Real depression differs from feeling sad in that with a clinical depression the sad, blue, depressed mood or lack of interest in usual hobbies or interests must last for at least 2 weeks and must be accompanied by at least 3 to 4 of the following: significant weight loss or gain, sleep disturbance (increased or decreased), agitation or decreased motor activity, fatigue or loss of energy, excessive feelings of worthlessness or inappropriate guilt, concentration difficulty, and recurrent thoughts of death or suicide.

How are depression and trauma related?

Depression can either “come from out of the blue” or it can be triggered by stressful events such as divorce, loss, or a trauma. Difficulty coping with painful experiences can often lead to intense sadness or depression. Veterans returning from military conflict or a war zone, for instance, may have painful Read More→

The Wisdom of the Elderberry by Stephanie Hein

Elderberries have been used for thousands of years and are widely known as the “poor person’s medicine chest.”  The medicinal use of Elderberry has been documented in Europe, North America, Northern Africa, and in some parts of Asia. In all of these different parts of the world it has been utilized to prevent and cure various different ailments.  The early settlers who brought Elderberry Folk knowledge with them to North America quickly identified a similar looking plant known as the American Elder or Sambuca Canadensis. The Native Americans at the time were well acquainted with their own variety of Elderberry, using it as a treatment for fevers. While many of the reported beneficial effects of using Elderberry lack adequate scientific validation, there are an increasing number of studies supporting important medicinal or therapeutic properties associated with Elderberries.

The American Elder is quite common and can be found growing as far north as Nova Scotia and as far south as Florida.  Two common places where it likes to grow are along roadsides ditches and especially on the edge of creek and river banks. Elderberry is a deciduous multi-stemmed shrub with brittle branches that easily bend under the weight of its fruit clusters.  In North Carolina, it’s beautiful white flowers are followed by fruit clusters beginning in the early fall months of August and September.  The berry’s dark blue/purple color comes from its high content of two substances shown to protect against a myriad of human disease, anthocyanin and bioflavonoids. Eating foods rich in these substances has been linked to a long list of favorable health benefits, including the reduction of inflammation, the regulation of immune responses, and decreased capillary fragility.

Along with containing anthocyanin and bioflavonoids, Elderberry has caught the eye of modern day health enthusiast due to its high Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Calcium, Iron, and B-6 content. These little berries also have a high ORAC value, surpassing the high antioxidant content of both cranberries and blueberries. Read More→

Food for Anxious Thought: Can Certain Food Affect Anxiety, PTSD?

By Shift Doctors · Comments (2)
Tuesday, August 2nd, 2011

Meet The Shift Doctors: Marion Ross, Ph.D. holds doctorates in Holistic Healing, Metaphysics, and Transpersonal Psychology as well as certification in Mind Body Medicine. Tracy Latz, M.D., M.S. is an Integrative Psychiatrist, Medical Intuitive and has served on Associate Clinical Faculty in the Department of Psychiatry at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine. She holds a Masters degree in Immunobiology, doctorates in Metaphysics & Holistic Healing, certifications in Mind-Body Medicine and is currently in private practice in a suburb of Charlotte, NC with over 20 years of clinical experience in shifting lives.

We all have our ‘comfort foods’ that we gravitate toward when we are more anxious, tense or fearful. What we may not know is that some of those foods may ultimately make our anxiety worse or put us on a repeating cycle of anxious eating- whereas, other foods can indeed be beneficial. How to know what can help and what might be worsening the situation? Hopefully, this will help clear it up.

11 (+3) Food Tips for Anxiety:

1. Complex carbohydrates (such as whole-grain cereals, breads, pastas and oatmeal) boost our serotonin level in our body in a steady manner. Serotonin levels are often found to be low in people suffering from anxiety and depression. Complex carbohydrates also stabilize blood sugar levels and are a much better choice of food than simple carbohydrates (candy, sweets, sugar) which cause spikes in both blood sugar and serotonin levels that then precipitously drop to induce anxiety again.

2. Vitamin C (found in citrus fruits such as oranges) have been shown to be somewhat helpful in lowering stress hormones in the body and to boost the immune system. One study showed that blood Read More→

4 End of Summer Cool Energy Boosters

By Shift Doctors · Comments (3)
Sunday, July 24th, 2011

1. Tap on or massage firmly an acupressure point that is known as the 27th
point of the kidney meridian. This area on the body can be located on the
chest about an inch below the collarbone and about 3 to 5 inches above
the nipple bilaterally. Stimulating this area on the body will immediately
pick up energy level, improve motivation and enhance attention.

2. Peppermint tea (hot or iced) improves energy level and focus.

3. The scent of citrus or lemon (as well as peppermint) can pick up energy level and improve concentration.

4. Wear or look at the color yellow. This also helps with boosting energy and motivation. Yellow placed around a workplace or an area where you are studying can help with focus and concentration.

5. Feeling overheated? Chilled Watermelon can help decrease heat held in the energy meridians and in the body. Refreshing Lemonade can also assist with cooling down while picking up energy.

Stay cool!! The summer will be over before you know it! :)

A Healthy Look at Menopause? by Melanie Smith, O.M.D.

For many, menopause is looked at as a curse rather than a blessing.

This is understandable since we are bombarded with so much information about the negative impact of menopause.  What we commonly hear about are the symptoms of hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia, fatigue, mood swings, memory loss, depression and anxiety.   While I don’t want to minimize the impact of those symptoms, it is important to recognize the whole picture.   For example:

Women may find themselves reviewing and reflecting on their lives during this time.  We may recognize unfinished business.  We may resist taking care of the unfinished business, but the energy of menopause will continue to press on us until it is addressed.  The relief of taking care of this Read More→
