2 Remedies To Prevent Falling Asleep While Meditating

After responding “well what were you doing last night” and “are you sleep deprived” our next question is “are you resisting going within”? But beyond all the answers which have to be tailored to each individual, we have 2 solutions to keep you awake during meditation~ The Six Minute Warm Up and The 5 Minute Routine.

The 6 Minute Warm Up for the body is not only a series of wise moves to lubricate your joints before you start your day after a night of rest or prior to qigong, tai chi or any strenuous physical activity, but is also an excellent tool to become present for meditation. Doing the The 5 Minute Energy Routine gets your energies crossed over and humming. Either one of these tools will give you great benefits for the body and mind. If you are feeling tired, you are not alone, it is estimated that 50 to 70 million Americans are sleep deprived.  Good sleep is by far one of the most critical factors in our overall health.  It is also one of the most commonly overlooked and undervalued.   For many people, sleep challenges have become a way of life.  Chronic tiredness, depression, anxiety and much more have become part of their daily existence.  It does not have to be that way, sleep problems are an energetic imbalance that can be resolved.  There are many things you can do on your own for better sleep and there are numerous energy medicine approaches that a skilled Acupuncturist or Energy Medicine Practitioner can do to shift your sleepless pattern.  Read on and learn more about a “Healthy Sleep Style.”

Why is sleep so important to our overall health?

Humans are very much affected by biological rhythms (Circadian rhythms) and these rhythms are determined by length of daylight hours.  In the center of our brain we have a structure called the pineal gland that is instrumental in regulating hormonal balances in our body based on our length of exposure to daylight.  Primitive man only had to deal with light in the form of daylight or moonlight; however, modern man has a more chaotic light exposure with the advent of technology such as the electric lightbulb, computers, video games and television.  We are no longer limited in our activity by the length of our available sunlight or moonlight. Sleep
Sleep is especially important during times of increased stress. However, many people can’t sleep well due to increased stress. If you have a hard time sleeping, get what sleep you can and try not to overdramatize your concerns about it, as that only makes it worse. Breathing an attitude of calm and relaxation for five minutes or so before bed has helped many people get more restful sleep. The Internet offers many suggestions for improving sleep, including diet, exercise and stretching. But as with most advice on the Internet, you have to use discretion. Due to increasing problems with sleep issues, many are turning to prescription medications. While medication may be necessary in some situations, people have a tendency to overmedicate in the pursuit of quick fixes. It’s worth checking out alternative methods, in case something simple helps. If medication is necessary, it is wise to follow the advice of a physician.

We suggest the Over Energy correction to cut the chatter in your head or calm you down when you are feeling  overwhelmed. To correct for over-energy: Cross the left ankle over the right, extend arms with backs of hands facing each other, bring right handover left, clasp fingers together, fold arms and hands inward and rest on the chest under the chin; rest tongue on the roof of your mouth behind your front teeth, breathe deeply for 1-2 minutes. It’s very calming for most individuals and can be used as a separate exercise to promote sleep and reduce acute anxiety.
